I remember watching these conversations between Glenn I and II back when the show was on Bloggingheads back in the late aughts. It’s been interesting to see both men change over the years, but still have all amazing conversations based on mutual respect and love.

I fasted and prayed (zero food, straight liquids) for 7 days leading up to Derick Chouvin's trial. I prayed he would be found guilty and get the maximum sentence. I was elated when the sentencing came down. After seeing the fall of Mpls this year and seeing what truly transpired I felt sick to my stomach. How could this kind of false propaganda happen in a free society where we pride ourselves on having a free press? This happens in places like Russia, China, and North Korea, not the United States of America. God help us....before it's too late.

Ugh. Glenn Jr doesn't understand the lessons from his dad. If I burn my hand on the stove and the tell you not to touch it, there is a lesson you can either learn from or make on your own. It would be utterly foolish to say: "Well, you touched the stove. How dare you tell me not touch it?

As an American mostly of Mexican ancestry I find the opinions of American liberals to be naive at best. There is zero understanding (perhaps willfully) of attitudes in much of that country toward women and young girls; the age of consent in much of the country was 12 until a few years ago. Obviously these are problems of every race/culture, but attitudes are vastly different when a culture is permissive of it. Additionally for some reason there's no ability to deduce the character of people who begin the American journey by flouting it's laws or to understand that there are everyday hard working white and blue collar people who choose to stay in Mexico and have a nice life there. The narrative seems to be that the guys at Home Depot were desperate and had no choice, as though there are not and will not always be people who find themselves in dire conditions all over the world. Why would such entitle one to citizenship elsewhere, necessarily to the detriment of people already lacking opportunity in their own society? That this is all to drive down wages for American corporations should be obvious, that most Americans don't recognize it is embarrassing.

Pronouns-- fight the 'they' culture. No, John, it does make a difference and is harmful.

Glenn's son can't accept the notion of Glenn Sr being conservative. It's as though "conservative" is worse than admitting to past adultery and drug use. This is a fundamental disconnect between Black Americans and conservativism. Glenn adeptly explains what "conservative" means. I'm a Black man who grew up with values that can only be labeled as conservative. The values and beliefs somehow conflict with modern politics. Glenn Sr is more tolerant of his son than he would be of someone else who spewed such left-wing dogma.

Easy to criticize. Easy to incorrectly reframe any progressive statement to your viewpoint. Stick to economics. Your cultural critiques are typical leaden arguments racist-republicans have been making since William Buckley. Yawn.

Mostly empty air that went nowhere from Jr. Political & socio-politically speaking, I have more respect for Senior. That being said, it was still heartwarming knowing that Jr and Sr have worked through their tension with each other and still have a bond & love. I'm happy for you two, in that regard. Also glad to know that Sr accepted Jr's as being gay, and that Jr can be open about it.

Using "they" to refer to singular nouns of unspecified gender (everyone, the employee) has long been accepted grammar, and also informally used to refer to someone not present, as in his example. The current issue is people labeling themselves non-binary and wanting to be called they/them at all times.

For as smart as the guy portrays “themselves” he’s quite the opposite. No more weak spined men, I’m tired of all this. No more giving ground. Tolerance has its limit and had weakened our western civilization. I came to US only knowing yes and window…this is so absurd! John did some really shoddy reasoning on the “bad hombres” point. Yes, there are homegrown criminals. But they have an inherent right to be in the country. You can’t deport or extradite a person with citizenship. Foreigners do not have that inherent right. Subject to exceptions, like refugee conventions, a state has no duty whatsoever to permit someone from another country to reside there. That’s a sine qua non of state sovereignty. His point is a non-point. There’s also the illogic of saying “we already have a lot of ‘bad’ people”. Again, what’s your point? We are stuck with them. We aren’t stuck with other countries’ “bad” people. Weak stuff from dear John on this one.

John is so condescending like many liberal elites when it comes to Trump. People are not dumb. Instead, try listening to Trump supporters, who are voting for him for very different reasons.

Sorry, I"m a writer and teacher. I will NEVER use "they" for the singular. I find it narcissistic and lazy, and, yes, politically correct. I will not be told by the mob how to speak when He and She are much clearer. There are only two sexes. I will avoid the pronoun they instead and go by a person's name because in NY it is a law to call someone by their chosen pronoun of the moment and I work in education and I could be get into administrative and possible legal trouble. So, there I have to self-censor (and one--but not the only--reason why I won't be voting Democrat for the seeable future as a former life-long Democrat.) Sometimes I find John a bit pandering and having drank the Koolaid because he is in that cultural world. His pronoun book is definitely one that I won't be buying and I've bought his other books.

Floyd was resisting arrest in a violent matter and Chauvin was following police protocol. City of Minneapolis violated due process of Chauvin. Public makes decisions based on excised UA-cam videos. Very scary.

If you are an influence to others do not censor yourself about trans issues especially. For a long time, me and many acquaintances i know, were afraid to speak out about it and felt trapped and manipulated into speech because it seemed like the country was going to go along with it. And maybe I'm old fashioned, but i think children being ALLOWED & PRAISED for cutting off healthy body parts over a feeling is seriously profoundly upsetting, disturbing, and just so so wrong. People have a RIGHT to go thru puberty naturally and learn some resilience to the feelings that are driving them to such extreme feelings. Think about it like seriously. It's creating a whole generation where a serious number of young people are going to all be sterile. Both boys and girls alike. Not only this but told abortion is OK and using drugs is OK, and never having kids is perfectly fine. I mean come on. Anyone over 40 should probably get what I'm saying. Kids are raised different now. Why do you think they hate someone like trump so much? He's trying to stop all this junk being taught to young people. Think about the difference between our youth and theirs now. Think about what they are being told. I really wish someone could explain to me why undergoing serious surgery as a minor over feelings is a totally condoned and supported activity. No tatoos. But irreversible steralization and surgery. It's upside down. Pretty sure i remember something in the Bible at the end about calling good bad, and bad good. But what do i know right. God help us. No one seems to see what they do. I have nothing against adults that choose this after they know who they really are and are centered and educated in their choice. But children? They are so confident in the moment. The people that are supposed to teach reason just praise them. They make serious choices. And so so so many regreat it. I work at a bar. There's so many. Angry. Resentful young people that can never have a normal future. We need to remember who we were as a nation. Before we are told to forget.

I was irritated with John's hysteria concerning Trump until I laughed out loud! I appreciate Glenn's calm disagreement. Theb John said he doesn't follow politics, but he obviously reads the left's opinion pieces, framing narrations and then adopts them. Oh, and there are repirts daily of migrants violently attacking Americans.. probably not written aboutin the NYT. Sure, not all of them are violent, but the drain on resources is real and affects the poorest Americans the most.

I appreciate this episode so much. Jr. is slightly stuck in left wing talking points and hasn’t taken a hard look at the work done by Roland Fryer (which every black democrat should do and be well versed in), but at least he will listen to his father.

I love this man’s mind and heart so much and it kills me that my liberal friends call him an Uncle Tom. Even the white ones.

It seems like Glenn the Younger is caught between what he knows to be right, and what society has taught him is the "right way to think," resulting in some incoherent statements and evasive responses to tough questions. A good first step to becoming an intellectual giant like his father would be ro reconsider whether the many things he dismisses as "obvious" are truly so, and why. Otherwise, his candor and honest statements about his dad were a pleasure.

John McWhorter, you are part of the NY Times media machine that peddles lies and stokes division. How can you take a check from them each week? You admit to peddling lies about George Floyd. Remember when reporters actually did research before writing stories? You need to repent for your role in peddling lies and the death and destruction that resulted. If you want to show your character, write the truth for the NYT, get fired for it, and then go to a truthful media outlet.

It's mind boggling to me listening to John talking in a calm pleasant voice about how open borders aren't a problem. Like he's never heard of fentanyl before and like they didn't just catch SIX terrorists coming across and like we have endless supplies of money to provide these people with debit cards, phones, medical care, housing, etc. Adding 11 million people to the population in 4 years won't have any effect at all on jobs or public services. It's not like every single European country who allowed this immigration became unstable or anything. To him it's all just hardworking families who want to open a candy store on Main Street USA. How can an obviously highly intelligent man think that? I truly don't understand.

I’ve always loved Glenn Loury. He is a voice in the wilderness and a rock to steer a course by And I am especially taken by his son and I had no idea he was also an author and I just went out and bought all of his books on Amazon. This man is as brilliant as his father.
